[poetry] Nobody Cares, But I Want To
Title: Nobody Cares, But I Want To
Rating: PG-13
Trigger Warning: references rape culture, ableist slurs, homophobia, transphobia, suicide
Inspired by this reblog meme against Homophobia and Melissa Li's Who Cares
"Nobody cares."
It's the echo of the girl raped on the street by the one she thought was her best friend.
"Nobody cares."
It's the echo of the child who screams about why he has to be embarrassed because he has two moms.
"Nobody cares."
It's the echo of the young girl crying for help as she debates jumping off that bridge.
"Nobody cares."
It's the echo of the autistic child who is thought to be retarded and defective.
"Nobody cares."
It's the echo of every single genderqueer individual on the planet.
"Nobody cares."
It's the echo of the different, the cries for help of the oppressed.
I want to be the one who cries out "I CARE FOR ALL OF YOU!"
I want to be the one who speaks from the heart, the famous words engraved within Lady Liberty:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Because there's many types of tiredness, and many types of poor.
There are many types of refuse, many types of homeless, and many types of tempest-tossed.
And all of these may have nothing to do with the ocean, but may well live next door.
